In the afternoon, you will start exploring Jaipur with a visit to the iconic Hawa Mahal or the “Palace of Winds.” This stunning pink sandstone structure is known for its intricate lattice work and unique architecture. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who was the founder of Jaipur. The primary purpose of the Hawa Mahal was to provide the royal women with a discreet vantage point from which they could observe the activities and events taking place on the streets below without being seen themselves.

After this, you will continue your journey to the Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Jantar Mantar is a collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments constructed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, in the early 18th century. The primary purpose of the Jantar Mantar was to measure time, predict eclipses, track the positions of celestial bodies, and assist in various other astronomical calculations.

This will be followed by a visit to the City Palace, which was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, in the 18th century and has since served as the residence of the royal family. The City Palace is a stunning example of Rajput and Mughal architecture. It features a series of courtyards, gardens, and palatial structures like the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Diwan-i-khas, Diwan-i-Aam, Patrika Gate, etc.

As you travel towards Bhangarh, your guide will share the intriguing history and legends surrounding the fort. Soon you will arrive at the fort, which is often labelled as the ‘Most Haunted Fort in India’. The Bhangarh Fort was constructed in the 17th century by Raja Madho Singh. It was once a thriving township with over 9,000 houses and was fortified by three layers of walls and five huge gates for protection – the main gate and 4 other ones namely: the Lahori Gate, the Ajmeri Gate, the Phulbari Gate and the Delhi Gate. The fort also houses the remnants of grand havelis, temples, and deserted marketplaces. It boasts of impressive architecture and stunning views of the Aravalli hills.

Legends of the fort’s haunting have made it a mysterious and intriguing destination. There are two popular legends that surround the fort.

  • The first one involves around a hermit named Baba Balau Nath, who used to meditate at the spot where the fort was constructed. The hermit permitted the fort to be constructed on the place only on one condition: that no structure could be taller than his house, and any shadow falling on his home would doom the town. However, Ajab Singh, Madho Singh’s grandson, disregarded this curse and raised the fort’s height, which further lead to the town’s fate.
  • The other legend revolves around Princess Ratnavati, who was known for her beauty. A wizard was infatuated with her and to woe her, he used dark magic but eventually failed. In anger, he cursed the entire city, which lead to its destruction by the invading Mughal forces who killed all the inhabitants, including the princess. The fort is since then considered haunted and is off-limits to visitors before sunrise and after sunset.

After visiting Bhangarh, you will continue your journey to Alwar which is known for its rich history and beautiful landscapes. On reaching Alwar, you will visit the Siliserh Lake Palace, which has been now converted into a tourist bungalow. This Lake Palace was built by Maharaja Vinay Singh for his Queen Shila in 1845 as a royal hunting lodge. It is perched on a cliff next to the Siliserh Lake.
